Revamping the Calgary John Howard Society!

Since 1949, the Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) charity has been aiming to keep Calgary communities safe. CJHS helps both adults and youth by providing them with the support they need to make better decisions, positive changes, and move away from criminal behaviours. Through evidence based, trauma-informed practices, the staff at CJHS address the root causes of crime while promoting individual accountability.

The Raido House, which was the focus of our Paint4Good project, is CJHS’s 8-bedroom house for marginalized youth ages 15-18. This home has 24/7 on-site support, intensive case management, and wrap-around supports. As a charity, little to none of their budget is allocated to fixing up the building and, as a 100-year old building, Raido needed help. The sheds and exterior of the kitchen addition were in a dire need of a fresh coat of paint, and we knew we could help!

“Thank you so much to The Urban Painter for gifting the Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) with your time and services to provide a beautiful refresh of Raido House!

The Project – The Sheds

The storage sheds hold the equipment that is used by the youth when they are helping with yard maintenance at the houses. Allowing the youth to participate in this maintenance gives them the opportunity to cultivate skills in landscaping and encourages them to care for the outdoor space in their community. Because of the amount of use they get, the sheds were in a fairly abysmal condition. The siding was chipped and had seen a significant amount of wear and tear.

Yvonne Laanstra from Staging Calgary donated her time and design skills to help the CJHS team decide on all of the colours for this Paint4Good project. With a plethora of options from Benjamin Moore, the colour selected for the sheds was Boston Brick (#2092-30), with the sidings kept black. We were also very lucky on this project because Solid Solutions Renovations donated their time and materials to fix-up the siding on the sheds!

“Refreshing the paint at Raido provides youth a home they can be proud of, where they feel safe and part of the community. When organizations like Paint4Good support places like Raido, it gives youth a sense of belonging and a feeling that they matter to the community. Being proud of one’s home encourages youth to take part in the upkeep and maintenance, helping to prepare them for adulthood and living on their own.”

The Project – Main Building

Raido House has housed close to 1,200 youth since 2003. In the past 100-year history of Raido House, there have been many renovations and additions made to the building to make it more safe, efficient, and attractive. One of these additions was the kitchen. The exterior of this kitchen addition has been deteriorating over the years with most of the paint chipping off. A fresh, new exterior would definitely help with the morale of both the staff and the youth.

Yvonne worked with the CJHS team and helped them select the colour Brown Horse (#2108-30) from Benjamin Moore for the exterior siding. The front and back door would both be painted a beautiful red using Benjamin Moore’s Grand Canyon Red (#2090-10). Both colours worked very well with the original brick of the main building and helped the entire Raido House look more cohesive and cleaner!

“Staff from the Urban Painter made a point of engaging with the clients to ask them for their opinions on what they’d like their home to look like. They were very respectful and made the youth part of the process… which is so important because it is their home! The fresh paint increases Raido’s lifespan and usability, while creating a more attractive place for youth and enabling CJHS to provide secure homes for youth where they have 24/7 on-site wrap-around supports, in a place where they are proud to call home.”

“The condition of the building and sheds at Raido house was so poor that we felt we had to help! We were so grateful that we could spruce up their housing and external areas to create a more welcoming space for the youth that call it home.”

The Project – Picnic Table

The youth residing in Raido House are encourage to enjoy the fresh air, but similarly to the sheds and the exterior of the kitchen addition, the paint on the picnic table in the backyard  was chipping and peeling away after years of use.

To spruce up the backyard, the CJHS team worked with Yvonne and chose the colour Stardust (#2108-40) for the picnic table. Although it is a small project, we hope that more of the youth will feel inclined to sit outside and enjoy the backyard space a little more!

“The Urban Painter painters were professional, efficient and always on time. They went over and beyond, taking initiative to paint our picnic table and steps at both the front and back doors. When organizations like Paint4Good support places like Raido, it gives youth a sense of belonging and a feeling that they matter to the community. Being proud of one’s home encourages youth to take part in the upkeep and maintenance, helping to prepare them for adulthood and living on their own.“
